The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is already stirring up controversy-and it hasn’t even been officially revealed. According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung may be planning a surprising materials change for its next-generation foldable.

And unfortunately, it’s not exactly an upgrade.

While the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts a titanium backplate for enhanced durability and a sleek, lightweight design, the upcoming Fold 8 might take a step backward. The rumor suggests that Samsung could revert to using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a material used in previous Fold models from the Z Fold 3 up until this year.

So why the sudden shift? It seems the decision might be driven by supply constraints rather than design preferences. With ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, sourcing titanium has become increasingly difficult. Samsung reportedly struggles to secure enough of the premium material from Chinese suppliers, making CFRP a more available-albeit less premium-alternative.

This potential downgrade could impact the Fold 8’s overall feel and performance. Titanium in the Fold 7 allowed for a thinner, lighter profile without compromising structural strength. Swapping it out may mean the Fold 8 won’t carry the same premium aesthetic or physical integrity.

That said, Samsung hasn’t finalized anything yet. The Fold 8 is still in development, and changes can certainly happen before launch. Many fans of the Fold 7 have praised its refined design and solid build, hoping the next model won’t abandon that progress.

Here’s hoping Samsung finds a way to maintain its momentum-and premium materials-even in the face of global supply challenges.
