Samsung is ready to pull ahead in the foldable race once again, this time with a true game-changer: a crease-free display on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold8.
According to reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the next generation of Samsung’s folding phone will debut a nearly invisible crease – and it might beat Apple to the punch.
The key innovation comes from Samsung Display’s supplier, Fine M-Tec, which is investing KRW 17.5 billion ($12.6 million) in advanced hinge technology. At the core of the upgrade is a new hinge made with laser-drilled metal plates. This refined design improves how pressure is distributed when the screen folds, reducing strain on the panel and virtually eliminating the notorious central crease.
Fine M-Tec is expected to provide over 80% of these new hinges for Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone as well – but Kuo believes Samsung will get first dibs. The Z Fold8 is now likely to showcase the new hinge design before Apple’s foldable device even launches.
The folding phone crease issue has long been attributed to hinge mechanics. Traditional hinges concentrate pressure along the center fold, causing wear over time. By dispersing stress more evenly with laser-drilled supports, the Fold8’s hinge lets the screen bend in a broader, more gradual arc – reducing creases significantly, if not eliminating them entirely.
This move could set a new standard across the industry. With Apple pushing for extremely high quality in its upcoming foldable, competitors may be forced to follow suit and adopt similar laser-drilled metal plate hinge systems. It’s not just about who folds first, but who folds best – and Samsung may have the upper hand.
