Gamefound Acquires Indiegogo: A New Era for Crowdfunded Board Games

In a major shake-up in the crowdfunding world, Gamefound-best known for supporting tabletop game creators-has officially acquired Indiegogo, one of the biggest names in global crowdfunding. This bold move is set to transform how creators launch and fund their projects, especially in the board game sector.

Announced via a joint statement, Gamefound revealed plans to integrate its advanced platform with Indiegogo’s, bringing with it a suite of creator-friendly tools. These include support for over 20 payment methods, a full-featured mobile app, robust marketing solutions, and streamlined pledge management systems. Even better, Indiegogo will now adopt Gamefound’s flat 5% fee model, offering creators more value from every dollar raised.

Julie dePontbriand, CEO of Indiegogo, praised the acquisition, saying, “Gamefound’s technology is unmatched. By combining forces, we’re pushing crowdfunding forward in ways that truly empower creators and excite backers.”

Though both platforms will continue to operate independently for the time being, the cross-pollination has already begun. Soon, Gamefound campaigns will be discoverable on Indiegogo, giving tabletop creators access to Indiegogo’s 38-million-strong global audience.

Launched 17 years ago, Indiegogo has raised over $3 billion for various projects spanning tech, film, innovation, and more. This merger gives the company a new edge in the increasingly competitive crowdfunding arena-especially against its long-time rival, Kickstarter.

For board game creators, this is particularly exciting. Gamefound’s streamlined tools and creator-first approach are already drawing major publishers. In 2024 alone, six out of the ten largest board game campaigns were funded on Gamefound, including the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 board game, which hit its funding goal in just 10 minutes.

By removing barriers like high fees and pay-to-win promotion systems, the partnership between Gamefound and Indiegogo could level the playing field and offer indie creators a fighting chance. This could mark the start of a new golden age for crowdfunded games-and a major challenge to Kickstarter’s dominance.
