Google’s Gemini AI is inching closer to becoming the go-to replacement for Google Assistant on Android devices.

One key feature that users have been missing-song identification-has finally been added, bringing Gemini a step closer to full Assistant-level functionality.

For a while, asking Gemini “What song is this?” led to a dead end, with the AI redirecting users to install a separate music recognition app. Meanwhile, Google Assistant would identify the tune effortlessly. But thanks to a recent update, Gemini can now leverage Google’s powerful “Song Search” feature directly within the app.

When you ask Gemini to identify a song, you’ll now see a colorful, oscillating orb as the AI listens in. Shortly after, it provides results via the Google app: the name of the song, the artist, an option to explore lyrics or get more info, and even a video of the song.

This improvement uses Google’s Utilities extension and the default Android Clock app integration, which already lets users set alarms and timers using voice commands through Gemini

. With the addition of real-time music recognition, Gemini’s capabilities now feel much more comprehensive and Assistant-like.

However, iPhone users won’t get the same functionality. On iOS, Gemini still says it’s a text-only AI and can’t hear audio. Even the Google app on iOS recommends third-party tools like Shazam for music ID. Siri, on the other hand, seamlessly identifies songs by tapping into Shazam-even if it’s not installed on the device.

As Google continues to enhance Gemini’s skill set, Android users can expect even more features that make it a true successor to the old Assistant experience.
