Google is pushing its AI game into schools with a major expansion called Gemini for Education. This new suite integrates powerful AI tools into Google Workspace for Education – all at no extra cost. 
Built on the Gemini 2.5 Pro engine, it includes enterprise-level data security, higher usage limits, and advanced admin controls.
Now considered a core part of Google’s education services, Gemini is available across all Workspace for Education plans. Over 30 new AI features aim to streamline tasks for educators – from generating vocabulary lists with definitions and examples to adapting content for varying skill levels.
One standout tool is NotebookLM, Google’s AI assistant for research and note-taking. Already supporting Audio Overviews, it’s now adding Video Overviews that transform written notes into short explainer videos. On top of that, teachers subscribed to the Gemini add-on can create lessons in Google Vids, while Gemini in Forms can automatically whip up quizzes and surveys from Drive documents.
Students aren’t left out either. Gemini Canvas lets them craft custom quizzes for studying, with support for visual aids like diagrams to better explain complex ideas. Currently available to users 18+, it’s expected to roll out to younger students soon.
Google is also giving instructors the power to assign custom AI agents – dubbed Gems – directly in Google Classroom. These AI assistants will be supported in Schoology Learning and Canvas, expanding accessibility across learning platforms.
Privacy and safety are key. Google promises that data from educational accounts won’t train its models. AI literacy training, tougher content filters, and strict admin tools help protect underage users. Admins can monitor how these tools are used and review AI-generated conversations – all backed by the Common Sense Media Privacy Seal.
Whether these tools become game-changers in real classrooms depends on how schools adopt them. Still, offering advanced AI for free in education opens new doors for personalized learning and time-saving solutions for teachers.
