Google Fi just rolled out a subtle but meaningful upgrade – and this time, it’s not about signal bars or coverage maps. The mobile carrier, which operates on T-Mobile’s network, has shifted its device protection plan to a new provider: Asurion.

That’s the same company trusted by heavyweights like Verizon, AT&T, and Samsung, so Fi users are now backed by one of the biggest names in the game.

This change officially kicks in for devices shipped on or after July 14, 2025. If you’re buying a new phone or smartwatch through Google Fi after that date, you’ll be protected by Asurion. And that’s not all – Fi has also tweaked the protection plan itself, giving it a helpful boost in the process.

Under the new terms, you can file up to two claims per year for lost, stolen, or physically damaged devices (excluding New York due to legal limitations). That’s double the previous allowance. The plan still includes two accidental damage claims – like cracked screens or liquid mishaps – and unlimited mechanical breakdown repairs.

The monthly cost depends on your device. Smartwatches like the Pixel Watch 3 or Galaxy Watch 8 are covered for just $4/month. Phones, on the other hand, are pricier: expect $12/month for the Pixel 9 Pro or $14/month for a top-tier Galaxy S25 Ultra. Deductibles also apply – a broken screen on your Galaxy Ultra, for instance, would cost about $29 to fix in-store.

So how does Google Fi compare to the competition? T-Mobile’s Protection 360 plan, still powered by Assurant, offers more theft/loss claims – up to five annually – and includes perks like $0 screen repairs. But it’ll cost you more, ranging from $7 to $25 a month depending on your device. High-end phones land you at the upper end of that scale.

Bottom line: Fi’s updated protection plan holds its own. With reliable coverage from Asurion, fair monthly pricing, and improved claims limits, it’s a solid choice – especially for those prone to mishaps. Just try not to make losing your phone a habit, alright?
