Google Messages RCS Update Brings Major Audio and Security Enhancements

Android users can expect an even better messaging experience with the recent announcement of Universal Profile 3.1, the latest version of the technical standard behind RCS (Rich Communication Services).

The GSMA’s update introduces several exciting features, gradually rolling out across apps and carriers supporting the platform, including Google Messages-and, eventually, Apple Messages too.

The highlight of Universal Profile 3.1 is the introduction of the xHE-AAC audio codec, which significantly improves the quality of audio content shared through RCS. Whether it’s voice messages, background sound clips, or any other audio, users will notice clearer, more natural playback. This codec enhances both speech and non-speech audio, including interactions with AI chatbots that rely on voice communication.

What makes xHE-AAC stand out is its efficient audio compression, which allows for high-quality audio without a big impact on file size. This results in smoother, more consistent playback across different devices and network conditions, ensuring that Android users enjoy a better voice messaging experience. Although it may take some time for carriers and apps to implement this upgrade, it promises to be a big step forward in how users communicate using voice on Android.

In addition to audio improvements, Universal Profile 3.1 also brings other technical enhancements aimed at improving how RCS connects with mobile networks. These updates include new methods for RCS clients to connect to operator services, offering a more seamless onboarding experience for users new to RCS. However, the exact details of these behind-the-scenes changes remain under wraps.

The update also brings smaller but important upgrades, such as better spam protection, more secure file transfers, and the ability to start conversations through deep links from other apps or websites. These changes will be seen in future versions of apps like Google Messages as they adopt the new 3.1 standard.

As RCS continues to evolve, this update makes it a more competitive messaging service, especially against platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp. While carrier and device compatibility still play a role, Universal Profile 3.1 shows RCS becoming a more robust and feature-packed messaging platform.
