Google Removes Popular Pixel Camera Feature – Social Share Gone

Google has recently made a change that may leave some Pixel users scratching their heads. In the latest update to the Pixel Camera app (version 9.9.106.773153235.19), Google has removed the popular Social Share feature. This change means that users can no longer quickly share images directly from the camera app, a feature that many relied on for seamless photo-sharing. The Social Share feature allowed users to swipe up from the image preview and instantly access six destinations to share their photos with.

Up to three of these destinations were customizable via the app settings.

For users with older versions of the Pixel Camera app, such as those on Pixel 6 Pro running Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, the Social Share feature is still available. In fact, these users can select up to three destinations through a simple process within the camera’s settings. They just need to open the Camera app, tap on the settings gear icon, navigate to the ‘More settings’ option, and toggle on the Social Share feature to customize their sharing destinations.

However, if you’ve already updated your Pixel Camera app to version 9.9, you’ll no longer have this convenient shortcut for sharing photos. Instead, you’ll have to open the Photos app, find the image, and tap the share icon to summon the share sheet. It’s an extra step that some might find frustrating, especially for those used to the ease of Social Share.

The 9.9 update also brings some design tweaks, including a revamped look for the 3, 5, and 10-minute timers. The new design makes the numerals easier to read, with black numbers on a white background inside a stopwatch-style icon. It’s a small change, but one that improves visibility, especially in bright environments.

Another notable missing feature is the Education Hub, which was supposed to be part of the June Pixel Feature Drop. This feature would have provided in-app instructions and tips for using the camera’s various modes. While this is still expected to arrive in a future update, it’s not part of the 9.9 release.

For now, if you want to try out the latest version of the Pixel Camera app, you can download it from the Google Play Store. Just keep in mind that, for some users, the convenience of Social Share is now a thing of the past.
