Google Search Live: A Game-Changer for iOS and Android Users

Google has begun rolling out Search Live to select Android and iOS users, allowing them to interact with their devices in a more intuitive way. Previewed at Google I/O last month, this feature brings conversational AI to the forefront, offering users a unique way to search and complete tasks with their phones. During the I/O demonstration, a video showcased a user attempting to repair his Huffy Mountain Bike. With Search Live, the user was able to ask for a manual and pinpoint the section related to brakes, search for a YouTube tutorial on fixing a stripped screw, and even browse email threads to find the exact size of the hex nuts needed. This is a glimpse into the potential of AI – not just for writing resumes or creating emojis, but as a tool for efficient, hands-on problem solving. Essentially, it’s like chatting with Google itself. As the feature rolls out, Android and iOS users can spot it by a small waveform icon under the search bar in the Google app. Tapping this will initiate a conversation with Search Live, allowing users to interact with Google in real time. The interface can switch between light and dark modes, and includes buttons for unmuting and transcribing conversations. However, Google does caution that the AI may occasionally ‘hallucinate’ or make mistakes, as this feature is still in experimental stages. Even more interesting, users can continue their conversations in the background if they exit the Google app mid-chat. While I’m still waiting for the update on my Pixel 6 Pro (Android 16 QPR1 beta 1) and iPhone 15 Pro Max (iOS 18.5), the potential of this new AI-powered search experience has me excited for what’s next.
