GPD has reportedly designed a prototype of a groundbreaking gaming handheld that uses AMD’s Strix Halo-based Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, which boasts an impressive 16-core setup and the powerful Radeon 8060S iGPU. While this device is generating buzz for its cutting-edge specs and extraordinary Time Spy score of over 10,000 points, its future is uncertain.

It may remain an internal prototype, with no clear plans for a market release.

Strix Halo, which was unveiled earlier this year as part of AMD’s flagship Zen 5 mobile lineup, brings significant advancements to mobile computing, particularly in gaming handhelds. Despite the promise of raw power and high-end graphics, the Strix Halo chips are expensive, and integrating them into a handheld device could push the price point beyond the reach of most consumers.

According to a leak from @9950pro, the GPD prototype achieved a Time Spy score of 10,393 overall and 10,366 in graphics, which is a remarkable feat for a handheld device. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor is equipped with an RDNA 3.5-based Radeon 8060S, offering the highest graphics score seen in handhelds to date. With this kind of performance, the handheld could easily run modern AAA games at high to ultra settings at 1080p, with smooth 60+ fps.

Despite this impressive performance, the Strix Halo’s steep cost-often exceeding $1500 for devices like mini PCs-makes it a less practical option for mainstream handheld gaming. Some reports suggest that such a device could easily surpass $2000, putting it out of reach for most gamers. As @9950pro suggests, this device might never make it to market, though it’s clear that gaming handhelds will eventually evolve to incorporate more powerful chips like Strix Halo or its future successors.
