Honor has officially confirmed the launch date for its highly anticipated Magic V5 foldable smartphone. The device will be revealed on July 2 during an exclusive event in Shenzhen, China, starting at 7 PM local time (2 PM UTC).
Alongside the Magic V5, Honor is also expected to unveil several other exciting devices.
Aiming for the World’s Thinnest Foldable
Honor is known for pushing the boundaries of foldable smartphone design, and the Magic V5 is no exception. Early reports suggest that the device could become the thinnest foldable on the market, with a folded profile under 9mm. This would beat the current record held by the Oppo Find N5, which measures 8.93mm, and even surpass the rumored thickness of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, expected to be around 8.9mm.
But don’t let the slim design fool you-Honor is not compromising on performance. The Magic V5 is rumored to feature a massive 6,100mAh battery, the largest ever in a book-style foldable, significantly larger than the Magic V3’s 5,150mAh battery. The device will also support 66W fast charging, with Honor aiming to maintain its impressive 45-minute full charge time, which could make the Magic V5 a battery champion in its category.
Flagship Specs and a Bold New Finish
The Magic V5 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Leading Version, a top-tier chip with performance cores clocked up to 4.47GHz. Geekbench listings suggest the device will come with at least 16GB of RAM and run on Android 15 for flagship-level performance. Honor has also confirmed the device will skip the “V4” naming convention, opting instead for the Magic V5, as per Chinese superstition.
The Magic V5 will be available in four colors: Velvet Black, Snow White, Tundra Green, and a new Silk Gold finish. This premium finish is designed to make the device stand out against Samsung’s more muted foldable color options.
Cameras, Display, and Satellite Connectivity
The Magic V5 will boast an 8-inch folding display and a 6.45-inch cover screen, both utilizing OLED technology for vibrant colors and deep contrast. The rear camera setup will reportedly include a 200MP periscope telephoto lens, a significant upgrade for foldables, making it one of the most powerful camera systems available on a foldable phone.
Another intriguing feature is BeiDou satellite messaging, which will enable off-grid communication-a feature that’s gaining popularity in high-end phones in China.
A Strong Rival to the Galaxy Z Fold 7
The launch of the Magic V5 is perfectly timed to rival Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is also expected to be unveiled in July. While Samsung may focus on software integration and Galaxy AI, Honor is betting on hardware innovation. With its thinner profile, larger battery, and potentially superior camera hardware, the Magic V5 could be a game-changer.
If Honor manages to deliver on its promises, the Magic V5 could shift the balance in the competition between Chinese and Korean foldable manufacturers. We’ll be watching closely to see how the device performs when it’s finally revealed on July 2.
