Honor Magic V5 Dethrones Galaxy Z Fold 7 as Slimmest Foldable – But Does It Matter?

Honor is skipping the expected Magic V4 and jumping straight to the Magic V5, which it claims will be the world’s slimmest foldable phone. In a scoop shared with Mark Gurman, the company revealed that the Magic V5 will measure just 8.8 mm when folded – narrowly edging out the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which comes in at 8.9 mm.

That 0.1 mm difference might sound trivial, but Honor’s real flex is what’s inside: a massive 6,100 mAh battery. In contrast, Samsung is reportedly sticking with the same 4,400 mAh battery seen in the Fold 6, which makes Honor’s engineering feat more than just a cosmetic upgrade.

Still, Samsung fans won’t be disappointed. The Fold 7 is expected to feature the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “Elite” chip (part of the Galaxy S25 family), a significantly less noticeable crease, and a promised seven years of software updates. That makes it the best Fold yet for One UI loyalists and anyone eyeing long-term support.

Both phones are expected to launch next month, along with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and possibly the more affordable Flip 7 FE. The timing sets up a summer showdown between Samsung’s proven polish and Honor’s bold push for design dominance.

But is chasing thinness really the future of foldables? Some users argue that the obsession with millimeters is getting ridiculous – especially if it comes at the cost of camera quality, durability, or usability. In any case, it’s clear that Honor has made a big statement. Whether that 0.1 mm matters to most users? Probably not. But a 6,100 mAh battery might.
