Honor vs Samsung: The 0.1mm Foldable Thickness Debate Nobody Asked For

The debate over which phone holds the title of the thinnest foldable just got messier. It all started when leaker Ice Universe posted a video claiming that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 is thinner than the Honor Magic V5, sparking confusion and controversy. On paper, that shouldn’t be the case: the Galaxy Z Fold7 is officially 8.9mm thick, while the Magic V5 (Ivory White variant) is listed at 8.8mm.

So why does Ice’s measurement show otherwise?

Honor quickly responded by sharing photographic evidence using calipers that show the Magic V5 measures exactly 8.80mm when folded and 4.10mm when unfolded. These numbers align with the official specifications, which are based on standardized lab testing. According to Honor, these measurements exclude the inner and outer screen protective films, which are removable, as well as the raised part of the camera module.

Ice Universe, however, posted his own caliper readings, showing 8.95mm for the Honor and 8.79mm for the Galaxy

. He insists the unit tested was the Ivory White version – the thinnest among the four Magic V5 colorways. Yet critics are questioning the reliability of these readings, especially since Ice previously claimed it was nearly impossible to measure accurately due to design variations.

Honor has remained transparent about the specs, stating on their global site that the 8.8mm measurement is specific to the Ivory White variant and excludes removable films and camera protrusions. They also acknowledge that small variances in production or measurement methods could lead to minor discrepancies.

Ultimately, this entire debate boils down to a marketing talking point. A 0.1mm difference is practically imperceptible in real-life use. What’s arguably more impressive is that Honor managed to squeeze in a nearly 6000mAh battery and a 1/2″ telephoto periscope camera into such a slim body-something competitors like Samsung, with its smaller battery, did not achieve.

While the internet argues over decimals, most users just want reliable, high-performing devices. Maybe it’s time to focus less on millimeters and more on meaningful innovations.
