HOTEL BARCELONA: The New Slasher Game from Swery and Suda51

HOTEL BARCELONA, the new game from Swery and Suda51, is set to release this September, and it’s shaping up to be a wild ride. White Owls has confirmed that the game will hit PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. This 2.5D sidescroller is a slasher game infused with roguelite and action elements, offering a fresh twist on the genre. Set in a mysterious hotel on the Pennsylvania-West Virginia border, the game hides a deadly secret.

The luxurious exterior of the hotel masks its true nature as a trap for the world’s most dangerous serial killers.

Players assume the role of Justine, a rookie federal marshal who harbors a dark secret-her mind is inexplicably linked to Dr. Carnival, a deranged murderer with a blood-soaked past. The game’s objective? Team up with Dr. Carnival to take down the Seven Slash Killers and escape the hotel’s nightmarish clutches. Each time Justine dies, she leaves behind an echo-a Slasher Phantom-mimicking her actions and aiding in subsequent runs. These phantoms are a clever mechanic, as they can be used as shields, distractions, or allies to wreak havoc on enemies, increasing their effectiveness with each failure.

The game features seven unique zones, each inspired by a different horror subgenre. From haunted mansions to twisted laboratories, each area promises its own unforgettable boss battle. To add even more variety, Hotel Barcelona supports multiplayer with both co-op and PvP modes. In co-op mode, up to three players can join forces to survive and eliminate threats, while PvP mode introduces a brutal element where a fourth player invades the world, making for an intense game of survival.

HOTEL BARCELONA will be playable at BitSummit XIII: Summer of Yōkai, Japan’s biggest indie game festival, from July 18 to 20 at the Miyako Messe in Kyoto. Attendees will get the chance to experience the opening section of the game, including its brutal first boss: Jacob, a baseball-obsessed serial killer who’s rumored to strike once every few years at the nearby baseball field. If you’re into twisted horror and challenging gameplay, mark your calendars for this one.

I love the idea of the Slasher Phantoms. A nice twist to the usual roguelite formula
