Huawei Mate X7 Leak Points to Thinner Fold and Major Camera Overhaul

Huawei’s next foldable, the Mate X7, is shaping up to be a serious contender in the premium foldable market – and this time, the company might finally nail the balance between style, camera hardware, and usability.

According to fresh leaks out of China, the Mate X7 will sport a 7.95-inch LTPO OLED inner display with a crisp 2K resolution and ultra-thin glass for added durability, keeping the design sleek and modern.

What’s especially notable is that Huawei is reportedly putting serious thought into the camera system. The company is testing two potential 50MP sensors for the main shooter – a 1/1.56-inch and a larger 1/1.3-inch option, both with physical variable apertures for better low-light versatility. There’s also word of a 50MP periscope lens with macro functionality, and possibly a multispectral camera for enhanced imaging. An ultrawide shooter will almost certainly be there, although details on that front are still vague – and frankly, this is the one area where Huawei has traditionally lagged behind.

Huawei’s last-gen Mate X6 caught flak for its underwhelming ultrawide camera, and fans are hoping the X7 will turn things around

. Even budget competitors like the Honor V5 are pushing stronger ultrawide setups. With the foldable competition – like the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Vivo’s X Fold line – ramping up with larger sensors and better processing, Huawei can’t afford to keep reusing outdated components.

Still, there’s reason for optimism. Huawei has been increasingly relying on domestically produced sensors, which may finally allow them to ditch the older 1/3-inch telephoto sensors and move towards a more balanced multi-camera setup. As one enthusiast pointed out, the jump from Samsung’s JN1 to JN5 was huge – but even JN5 is starting to feel dated in the Ultra tier. It’s time for flagship foldables to embrace at least 1/1.43-inch sensors on the main cameras, and Huawei could lead that shift if it plays its cards right.

Another major point of feedback from users? Thickness. Foldables are supposed to be sleek, and if Huawei can make the X7 as slim as the Galaxy Z Fold5 while still fitting in a large battery and a quality sensor array, it could set a new benchmark. Some users have even called for Huawei to offer a Pro model with all the advanced sensors and a base version with just a solid wide and ultrawide – slimming things down and keeping the cost reasonable.

The Huawei Mate X7 doesn’t have a launch date yet, but leaks suggest we’re just a few months away. Let’s hope Huawei delivers something more than just another midranger in a luxury shell – this could be the foldable that finally gets everything right.
