Huawei has rolled out its latest Pura 80 series, spotlighting impressive 1-inch sensors, beefed-up processing power, larger batteries, and enhanced satellite communication. This launch includes four new models, but we’ll focus here on the Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, and Pura 80 Pro+.

The Ultra variant is covered separately.

The base Pura 80 sports a flat 6.6-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 1256 x 2760 pixels and 10-bit color support. It boasts a sizable 5,600mAh battery complemented by 66W wired and 50W wireless charging. The Pro and Pro+ step up to slightly larger 6.8-inch quad-curved glass screens that maintain a flat look, paired with a 5,700mAh battery and faster charging speeds of 100W wired and 80W wireless. While the vanilla model comes with a USB 2.0 port, both Pro versions upgrade to USB 3.1 Gen 1.

Huawei remains tight-lipped about the exact chipsets but claims the Ark Engine in Pro models delivers 36% better performance than before. The Pura 80 and Pro both come with 12GB RAM and storage options of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB. The Pro+ offers 16GB RAM and skips the 256GB tier, focusing on 512GB and 1TB.

Camera-wise, the vanilla Pura 80 features a 50MP main sensor with variable aperture (f/1.4-f/4.0) and OIS, alongside a 12MP periscope telephoto with 5.5x zoom, a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and a 1.5MP multi-channel spectrum sensor. The selfie shooter across the lineup is a 13MP ultra-wide with autofocus.

The Pro and Pro+ models step up the imaging game with 1-inch 50MP main sensors, variable aperture (f/1.6-f/4.0), and OIS. Their telephoto cameras jump to 48MP with a 4x zoom and tele-macro capabilities. The ultra-wide sensor also increases to 40MP, supported by the same 1.5MP spectrum sensor.

One standout is Huawei’s upgraded satellite messaging. The Pura 80 and 80 Pro tap into the Beidou constellation, allowing not only text but also photo messaging and emergency alerts. The Pro+ adds dual satellite support, including Beidou and Tiantong, maintaining connection without needing to manually point the phone.

Connectivity is next-level with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.2 supporting LDAC and L2HC codecs, NFC, and NearLink-a Huawei-led alternative to Bluetooth. Durability is solid too, with IP68 water resistance and IP69 protection against high-temperature water jets.

The Pura 80 Pro and Pro+ are now available in China, with prices ranging from about $900 to $1,250 depending on storage and model. The vanilla Pura 80 hasn’t launched yet.

While Huawei’s innovations in camera and satellite tech impress, opinions vary on pricing and chipset transparency. Some see it as a bold step forward amid restrictions, others question if it justifies the cost, especially without clear details on the processor inside.
