Huawei Pura 80 Series: The Future of Smartphone Photography

Huawei has unveiled its latest flagship series, the Pura 80, which could potentially redefine smartphone photography. This series, launched in China, features four models: the Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, Pura 80 Pro+, and Pura 80 Ultra.

While all four share the same sleek design, they differ in their specifications and pricing.

The base model, the Pura 80, is the most compact, featuring a 6.6-inch flat OLED display, while the Pura 80 Pro, Pro+, and Ultra models sport slightly larger 6.8-inch quad-curved screens. Each device offers a top-tier 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate, a P3 wide color gamut, 460 ppi, 3000 nits peak brightness, HDR, and second-generation Kunlun Glass, ensuring vibrant, smooth visuals across the board.

In terms of cameras, all four devices come equipped with a 50-megapixel main sensor, enhanced by AI noise reduction. This marks a significant leap from the previous Pura 70 series, with Huawei claiming a 200% improvement in real-time image data processing. The camera setup on the base Pura 80 features a variable f/1.4-f/4.0 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), while the more advanced Pro, Pro+, and Ultra models feature a f/1.6-f/4.0 aperture, offering more versatility in low-light conditions. The Pura 80 Ultra takes things a step further with a 1-inch sensor and TCG triple-real-time fusion technology, capturing even the most intricate details in challenging light.

One of the standout features of the Pura 80 Ultra is its world-first dual-lens telephoto system, enabling exceptional zoom capabilities. The Pura 80 Ultra’s camera system includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 40-megapixel ultra-wide lens, alongside a 1.5-megapixel multi-channel spectrum sensor. Meanwhile, the Pro and Pro+ models pack 48-megapixel telephoto cameras and 40-megapixel ultra-wide lenses.

Under the hood, the Pura 80 Pro+ and Pura 80 Ultra are rumored to feature Huawei’s new Kirin 9020 chipset, the same one used in the Mate 70 Pro+. Huawei has not confirmed this, but the company did mention that the Pura 80 offers up to 36% better performance than the Pura 70 Pro+, which uses the Kirin 9010 chipset. The Pura 80, meanwhile, is equipped with the Kirin 9020A 5G chipset, a slightly downgraded version of the standard Kirin 9020.

The battery life is another highlight. The Pura 80 comes with a 5,600 mAh battery supporting 66W wired and 50W wireless charging speeds, while the Pro, Pro+, and Ultra models feature slightly larger 5,700 mAh batteries with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. In comparison, the Galaxy S25 Ultra packs a 5,000 mAh battery with 45W wired and 15W wireless charging, making the Pura 80 series a significant contender in terms of power delivery.

Huawei’s new flagships also support Beidou satellite communication, allowing users to send and receive messages and photos even without cellular coverage. The Pura 80 Pro+ and Pura 80 Ultra go even further with dual satellite communication (Beidou and Tiantong), enhancing their reliability for remote areas.

As for pricing, Huawei’s latest models are no longer as affordable as their previous offerings. The Pura 80 Pro, Pura 80 Pro+, and Pura 80 Ultra are priced similarly to high-end models from brands like Samsung and Xiaomi. Currently, the prices are as follows:

  • Pura 80 Pro 12/256GB – 6,500 yuan ($905 / €775)
  • Pura 80 Pro 12/512GB – 7,000 yuan ($975 / €850)
  • Pura 80 Pro 12GB/1TB – 8,000 yuan ($1,115 / €970)
  • Pura 80 Pro+ 12/512GB – 8,000 yuan ($1,115 / €970)
  • Pura 80 Pro+ 12GB/1TB – 9,000 yuan ($1,250 / €1.090)

  • Pura 80 Ultra 16GB/1TB – 11,000 yuan ($1,530 / €1.335)

The Pura 80 series is expected to be available in multiple colors, including black, white, gold, and red, with the base Pura 80 still awaiting release. While these phones are currently available in China, global availability may bring slightly higher prices.
