Incredibles 3, the highly anticipated continuation of the beloved Pixar franchise, will reportedly have a new director-Peter Sohn, who previously worked on Elemental and The Good Dinosaur, instead of Brad Bird. According to THR, while Bird, who wrote and directed the first two Incredibles films, will not be returning to direct, he will still be deeply involved as the screenwriter and producer, alongside Dana Murray, producer of Soul.
The official announcement of Incredibles 3 came at D23 2024, and although we don’t know many details yet, this change in direction has sparked mixed reactions among fans.
It’s important to note that while Bird is working on Skydance’s Ray Gunn, a project that may have influenced this decision, the two directors share a long working history. Sohn has contributed to every Pixar film directed by Bird, including voicing characters like Emile from Ratatouille, Squishy from Monsters University, and Sox from Lightyear.
Despite some hesitation surrounding this shift in leadership, the Incredibles franchise remains a massive success. The first film, released in 2004, earned $631 million globally and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Incredibles 2, released in 2018, grossed an astonishing $1.24 billion worldwide, solidifying the franchise as a major player in the animation world. With Bird continuing to write and produce, fans can only hope that Incredibles 3 will maintain the high standard set by its predecessors.
