iOS 26 brings exciting upgrades, especially to the Weather app, making it smarter and more responsive to your needs. One of the most anticipated features is the addition of Severe Weather Alerts and Widgets for Predicted Travel Destinations. This proactive alert system will notify you of severe weather conditions at places you’re planning to visit, even before you arrive. Powered by Apple’s advanced Proactive Intelligence, it tracks your potential travel routes and locations, provided you’ve granted permission to access ‘Significant Locations & Routes’ in your settings.

While the current weather alert system only notifies you of conditions at your present location, iOS 26 takes things a step further by estimating your future travel destinations. If you enable location permissions and severe weather alerts, the Weather app will predict the places you’ll likely visit and send relevant notifications directly to your device. This feature ensures you’re prepared for any unexpected weather, avoiding surprises on your trip.

Additionally, the Weather app now integrates with Smart Stacks in watchOS 26, allowing you to see destination-specific widgets right on your Apple Watch. With this, key weather information is always within reach. The new satellite-based system also ensures that weather updates are available even when you’re offline, without Wi-Fi or cellular coverage.

To activate these features, go to Location Services and enable ‘Significant Locations & Routes.’ Then, set your Weather app location access to ‘Always’ and turn on severe weather notifications in the app’s settings. Once set up, the Weather app will keep you informed about weather conditions at your predicted destinations. Apple also notes that your Apple ID may be associated with your travel regions, similar to how they handle your current location alerts.

iOS 26 is currently available in the developer beta version, with a public beta coming in July. The stable release will coincide with the iPhone 17 launch in the fall, bringing these powerful new features to a wider audience.

I love the idea of travel weather notifications, but I wonder how accurate they will be 🤔

Honestly, if this works as advertised, it’ll be super helpful! I hate being surprised by weather while on the go
