The iPhone 17 Might Grow in Size, but Is Bigger Always Better?

The iPhone 17 is shaping up to be a subtle but significant shift in Apple’s smartphone lineup.
iPhone 17: Apple’s Base Model Grows to 6.3 Inches – But Is That a Good Thing?
According to reliable display analyst Ross Young, the standard iPhone 17 will feature a 6.3-inch display—making it the first base model iPhone to exceed the long-standing 6.1-inch screen size. This change means the iPhone 16 will be the last of its kind in terms of compactness among the mainline models.

While screen size is increasing, not everyone is thrilled. Many long-time users have voiced concerns over usability, weight, and the gradual disappearance of smaller, one-hand-friendly phones. Some wish Apple would bring back a 6.0 or even 5.9-inch variant to offer a more diverse range for users who value compact designs. A larger display doesn’t always mean a better user experience—especially if weight and bulk come along with it.

Interestingly, the iPhone 17 Pro will also have a 6.3-inch screen, matching the base model in size for the first time since the iPhone 15/15 Pro duo. However, differences remain: the Pro variant is expected to retain features like ProMotion (120Hz refresh rate) and higher peak brightness—though even that may not be a major differentiator anymore, as recent rumors suggest ProMotion might arrive on the standard model too.

The rest of the iPhone 17 lineup looks equally intriguing. Apple is reportedly planning to introduce a new 6.6-inch iPhone 17 Slim (or possibly Air), replacing the iPhone 16 Plus. The Pro Max will stay the largest at 6.9 inches, offering a more comfortable option for those who prefer large screens for media and multitasking.

Still, Apple’s move toward larger displays across the board is sparking criticism. Some call it a sign of innovation fatigue—when size becomes the headline instead of new features or breakthrough functionality. Meanwhile, others question whether Apple will include long-awaited updates like a separate number row on the keyboard or meaningful RAM/storage upgrades. The rumored 8GB RAM and same A18 chip as the iPhone 16 in the base iPhone 17 is hardly the kind of leap forward users have been hoping for.

With rumors of under-display Face ID being delayed, and price hikes expected, some fear that Apple’s “vanilla” models are growing in size without growing in value. Time will tell if a larger display alone will be enough to win over users—or push them toward Android alternatives that offer more variety in size and features.

Why can’t we get a modern iPhone that’s smaller AND lighter? I miss my 5.8″ days 😔

Looks like Apple just wants us all to buy the Pro Max whether we like it or not 🤷‍♂️

Y’all hype about 0.2 inches? Meanwhile, no changes to keyboard or battery. 🫠

Let me guess, 8GB RAM and same chip as iPhone 16 but with a shiny new name and $200 more 💸

Tbh I’d buy a 5.9″ iPhone with good battery in a heartbeat. Not everyone wants a tablet in their pocket
