Apple’s sleek new iPhone 17 Air is rumored to continue the recent trend of subtle, muted colors – and fans are already split.
According to leaked info, the upcoming ultra-slim flagship might debut in a super-light blue so pale it nearly looks white under bright lights. It’s a move reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra’s “Silverblue” – a color that’s elegant but not exactly bold.
This delicate shade could disappoint those hoping for a punchier hue. However, Apple might be throwing a bone to color lovers by introducing a fresh purple variant on the base iPhone 17 model. Unlike the pale lavender of the iPhone 14, this new purple is said to be deeper and more visually appealing – though not quite as rich as the regal purple seen on the iPhone 12.
Last year’s iPhone 16 saw a fan-favorite in its vibrant Ultramarine finish, making this rumored shift to desaturated colors for the iPhone 17 Air a bit of a letdown. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S25 Edge – Apple’s main competition – isn’t faring much better. Its Titanium Jet Black, Silver, and Icy Blue options are all sleek, but similarly lacking in vibrant tones.
Beyond colors, there’s more controversy brewing. Reports suggest the iPhone 17 Air might suffer from durability issues due to its thin LTPO OLED display. The panel, which finally bumps the refresh rate up from 60 Hz, is so thin that early units are reportedly cracking under minimal stress. It’s a bold hardware move, but one that could come with fragility concerns.
The iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the Plus line and debut alongside the full iPhone 17 series later this year. Whether it can match or exceed the Samsung Edge in both style and performance remains to be seen – especially if its color palette stays stuck in the grayscale zone.
