iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: A Major Leap with Under-Display Face ID

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are set to feature a major display upgrade, including under-display Face ID technology. While rumors about under-display tech have been circulating for years, it looks like the iPhone 18 Pro series will be the first to bring this cutting-edge feature to life.

According to the well-known Weibo leakster, Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature 6.27” and 6.86” OLED displays, respectively, both utilizing LTPO panels with a 1.5K resolution.

One of the most exciting features is the adoption of HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) technology. This is a punch-hole design where part of the display’s pixel matrix is removed to allow for a clearer view of the camera lens below. The new Face ID system will also be integrated under the display, eliminating the need for a notch or visible sensors.

For context, Face ID as we know it uses a combination of infrared light technology: a projector that beams infrared patterns, a flood illuminator, and a camera to capture the light’s reflection. Current under-display camera tech is optimized for visible light, not infrared, which has led to doubts about whether this system would work. However, Apple has reportedly solved this challenge and is already testing prototypes.

Although similar rumors surfaced with the iPhone 15 and 17, this technology is expected to debut with the iPhone 18 Pro series next year. Of course, this all depends on whether Apple can overcome any unexpected technical issues.
