Ironheart Finale Leaves Fans Wondering About the MCU’s Future Plans

The finale of Marvel’s Ironheart series has left fans with more questions than answers, particularly regarding the future of key characters in the MCU. Creator Chinaka Hodge revealed that the introduction of the long-awaited villain Mephisto wasn’t entirely her decision. Rather, it was a collaborative choice, influenced by Marvel’s broader plans. Despite the show’s attempt to wrap up its storyline, several loose ends remain, and the connections to the MCU seem deeper than many expected.

Whether these threads will be explored further in future MCU films, Disney+ series, or additional Ironheart seasons remains uncertain, though Hodge has expressed hope for more seasons of Ironheart.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hodge addressed the buzz surrounding Mephisto’s introduction, revealing that the casting of Sacha Baron Cohen as the villain wasn’t a decision made solely by her. “It was not my decision alone. I was empowered by Marvel to make that decision,” Hodge said. She further emphasized her surprise at the show’s conclusion, noting that she, like the audience, was taken aback by the unexpected twists in the finale. In this episode, Riri Williams strikes a deal with Mephisto to bring her deceased best friend back to life, leaving the outcome of this bargain unclear.

The future of other characters is equally ambiguous. Anthony Ramos’ villain, The Hood, is defeated by Riri Williams, but his fate is left open-ended. The Hood’s last scene hints at him seeking help from mystical beings, potentially setting up a future crossover with characters like Benedict Wong’s Sorcerer Supreme. Could this be laying the groundwork for Marvel’s previously planned, though now on-hold, Strange Academy series?

As for Mephisto, his introduction seems to be a clear signal that he’s destined for more appearances in the MCU. The possibility of him crossing paths with magical characters like Wiccan or even Blade is intriguing, though nothing official has been announced about his future role. Marvel has yet to confirm any plans for the continuation of Ironheart or the character of Riri Williams in upcoming MCU projects, leaving fans in suspense. Actress Dominique Thorne, who portrays Riri Williams, has not yet received an invitation to join the Avengers lineup. However, Hodge remains hopeful that Ironheart’s journey will continue, expressing her wish for more seasons of the show. “I’ll keep it with you a buck, I’m hoping for all work in Hollywood right now. Yes, a second season, a third season, a fourth season. Yes!”

I'm really hoping they do something with this storyline. It's not over yet, right?
