James Gunn has revealed exciting plans for the rebooted DC Universe (DCU), promising that each upcoming movie will have a unique tone and feel. From Superman to Clayface, Sgt.
Rock to Supergirl, each film will offer a distinct flavor that breaks away from the idea of a unified style. Gunn’s approach mirrors the strategy employed by DC Comics, which features various tones across its graphic novels, even though they all exist within the same universe.
Speaking with IGN at the Superman red carpet event, Gunn explained that every DCU project would carry its own individual “stamp.” While All-Star Superman has been a major influence on his new Superman film, Gunn emphasized that the DCU will not follow a single style or tone. “This movie is very different from the R-rated movie we’re making, a body horror film with Clayface. It’s very different from the Sgt. Rock movie we’re developing. It’s very different from Supergirl, which is a space fantasy,” he said. He further highlighted the diversity of tones, giving a nod to the DC Comics legacy, where iconic works like The Long Halloween, Dark Knight, and Watchmen are tonally distinct but still part of the DC universe.
One highly anticipated project is the Clayface movie, set for release on September 11, 2026. Gunn has been vocal about its gritty, psychological horror elements, calling it “pure f***ing horror, like, totally real” and promising a true, disturbing body horror experience. Clayface, a shape-shifting villain from Gotham City, is one of Batman’s oldest foes, first introduced in 1940’s Detective Comics #40. Meanwhile, Supergirl is poised for a space-faring adventure, with Kara Zor-El’s story set to unfold in 2026 alongside Jason Momoa’s Lobo. Gunn’s new Superman movie, slated for release on July 11, has already garnered positive reviews, signaling a fresh start for the DCU.
For Gunn, these projects represent a departure from the typical superhero movie formula, offering a refreshing diversity in tone and genre. Whether it’s horror, fantasy, or action, the new DCU promises a universe full of distinct, varied stories that stay true to the rich history of DC Comics.
