James Gunn has made it clear that he has no intention of retconning the controversial twist in Superman’s origin story. The twist, which reimagines Jor-El and Lara as villains who sent their son to Earth not to protect humanity but to rule over it, has shocked many fans. 
Some have hoped that Gunn would eventually undo the twist, but he has firmly stated, ‘they’re s**t out of luck!’
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn emphasized that the twist is not a fake-out. Superman’s parents’ devastating message is real, and there’s no going back. He explained that if he were to change it, it would undermine the emotional core of the movie. ‘That’s the whole point of the movie,’ Gunn said, ‘Superman thinks he’s doing what he’s meant to do, but then he discovers that it’s not because of his Kryptonian parents. It’s because of himself.’
Gunn clarified that while Jor-El and Lara’s actions are nefarious, they’re not entirely evil. ‘They just think of humans as inferior, like sea turtles to them,’ Gunn explained. ‘Their goal is to keep the Kryptonian bloodline alive.’
Addressing questions about a potential plot hole-why didn’t Supergirl warn Superman about his parents’ intentions?-Gunn responded, ‘You’re assuming that everybody on Krypton is the same!’ He pointed out that Supergirl was younger and wouldn’t have had the same knowledge of her parents’ intentions.
Fans may get more answers when Supergirl, scheduled for release in June 2026, hits theaters. For now, the twist remains intact and is central to Superman’s journey of self-discovery.
