Limited Run Games has asked Nintendo to temporarily remove the Gex Trilogy from the Switch 2 eShop, citing unresolved backwards compatibility issues. This decision comes after the publisher encountered delays in getting a patch approved that would resolve these issues. The patch, which aims to fix compatibility for games originally released on the Switch 1, was delayed due to the Juneteenth holiday, pushing approval back to next week.
In the meantime, Limited Run decided it was best to pull the game to avoid further frustration for players.
While some titles have been successfully updated to work with the new hardware, Gex Trilogy still faces issues. The collection, which includes the three Gex platformers-Gex, Gex: Enter the Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko-has been available on multiple platforms since June 16, including PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
Originally released in 1995 for the 3DO, the Gex series gained popularity and was later ported to various other platforms. However, the excitement for this remaster is tempered by the ongoing technical problems, especially with the Switch 2’s software-based backwards compatibility. Unlike older consoles like the Wii U and 3DS, which used actual hardware for backwards compatibility, the Switch 2 requires software updates to run games from its predecessor. This has led to some growing pains as patches continue to be rolled out.
The current period of compatibility patching is expected to last for several weeks, potentially months, as more games undergo updates. Nintendo’s Switch 2 has already sold 3.5 million units, but early analysis of game sales paints a mixed picture. While first-party titles perform well, third-party games, especially older ones, have faced some challenges in adapting to the new system.
Despite the setbacks, Limited Run Games has urged players to check if other titles are running properly, as many of their games have been updated to work seamlessly with the new system. The publisher remains optimistic that the patch will go live soon, bringing much-needed compatibility fixes for the Gex Trilogy and other affected titles.
