Apple’s M5 iPad Pro May Feature Dual Front Cameras for Seamless Face ID

Apple is reportedly planning to fix one of the most debated aspects of its current iPad Pro design. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming M5 iPad Pro could introduce a dual front-facing camera system – with one camera located on the landscape edge and the other on the portrait edge.

This design aims to improve Face ID performance and video calling, no matter how the iPad is held. When the M4 iPad Pro launched in 2024, Apple shifted the camera to the landscape edge, optimizing for users who dock their tablets with keyboards or use them in horizontal mode. However, this shift frustrated those who prefer holding their iPads in portrait.

The rumored dual-camera solution seems to be Apple’s answer to those complaints. With cameras on both axes, Face ID, selfies, and FaceTime calls should feel natural whether you’re holding the iPad vertically or horizontally. It reflects a deeper Apple strategy: making the iPad a truly adaptive device for both personal and professional use.

This concept isn’t entirely new. Back in 2010, Apple had considered placing dock connectors on both sides of the original iPad, although that idea was scrapped – reportedly by Steve Jobs. Now, with the M5 iPad Pro, the company seems to be reviving that spirit of flexibility.

Aside from the camera enhancement, the M5 iPad Pro is expected to debut a new Apple Silicon chip, presumably the M5, alongside thinner design elements and tighter accessory support. Yet, for many users, the subtle convenience of not needing to rotate their device to unlock it or start a call may be the most appreciated upgrade.

Gurman also suggests that the new camera modules will be discreetly embedded in the bezels, preserving Apple’s signature clean aesthetic. While the update isn’t a dramatic overhaul, it signals Apple’s continued commitment to refining how we interact with its flagship tablet.
