Apple has confirmed that macOS Tahoe 26 will be the final version of its desktop operating system to support Intel-based Macs. This announcement came during the company’s WWDC 2025 keynote and was further clarified in follow-up discussions with the press.
Apple’s macOS Tahoe Marks the End of Intel Mac Support
The transition away from Intel processors, which started back in 2020 with the introduction of Apple Silicon chips, is now fully underway.

While macOS Tahoe will still be compatible with some Intel Macs, including the 2019 Mac Pro and select high-end MacBook Pro models, future macOS versions will be exclusive to Apple Silicon devices. However, Apple assures that Intel-based Macs will continue receiving security updates and bug fixes for at least the next two years, though no new features will be included.

This move marks the final phase of Intel Mac support, which has been gradually fading. Apple’s increasing emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and battery optimization has primarily focused on its own silicon, leaving Intel-based Macs behind in terms of new features. The latest macOS features, like Apple Intelligence, will only work on M-series Macs.

As of mid-2025, Apple no longer offers Intel-based Macs in its official stores. The last Intel Mac in Apple’s lineup, the 2019 Mac Pro, was discontinued earlier this year and replaced by its Apple Silicon counterpart. Models like the 13-inch Intel MacBook Pro and the Intel Mac mini were phased out in favor of the M-series chips, with remaining Intel Macs now available only through third-party resellers or the refurbished market.

On the positive side, this shift enables Apple to further optimize its software for Apple Silicon, benefiting users with newer devices. However, it also raises concerns about the longevity of older, expensive Intel Macs. For many users, this change signals the end of the line for their current machines, as full support for Intel Macs will eventually come to a close. With macOS Tahoe, Apple has officially made the transition to a future entirely powered by its own Silicon.
