Mafia: The Old Country Promises To Be The Best Looking Mafia Game Thanks To Unreal Engine 5

Mafia: The Old Country, slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on August 8, 2025, promises to be the most visually stunning game in the Mafia franchise, according to developer Hangar 13. In the lead-up to its launch, the studio has been showcasing how much the prequel has improved, particularly in terms of graphics, thanks to Unreal Engine 5.

A new developer diary, titled ‘Art Meets Technology,’ provides an in-depth look at how Unreal Engine 5 is enabling a level of detail never before seen in the series.

Art director Steve Noake explains, ‘Unreal Engine 5 allows us to tell the story in a way we couldn’t with other technologies. From Metahuman to Nanite and Lumen, we’re pushing these technologies to their limits. This means we can focus on the subtleties of performance and automate parts of the process, letting us add our own touch to the assets.’ Lead character artist Ivan Rylka shares his excitement, stating, ‘I have no hesitation that this will be the best looking Mafia game in the franchise.’

The developer is clearly focused on delivering not just a visually impressive game but one that exceeds the quality of past Mafia titles. While the looks are impressive, fans are eager to see if the gameplay and story will also live up to expectations when the game launches next August.

They were able to make this look good on PS4 a few years back, so why the stutter now with UE5?
