Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities Preview – Everything Announced

Magic: The Gathering Edge of Eternities Preview – All the Cosmic Details Revealed

Wizards of the Coast is diving deep into the cosmos with the new Magic: The Gathering set, Edge of Eternities, launching a new wave of gameplay mechanics and stunning visual treatments. The spoiler season is officially underway, unveiling a collection of innovative ideas like Station and Warp, as well as a galaxy of new cards that will ignite both drafting strategies and competitive play.

The Edge of Eternities set takes us to the outer reaches of the multiverse, exploring diverse storylines: Sami, Wildcat Captain, and their quirky crew of misfits; monks meditating around a black hole; and five planets each embodying one of Magic’s five mana colors. It’s a cosmic blend of fantastical worlds, characters, and mechanics, bringing familiar faces and archetypes into an entirely new setting.

Fans of returning characters will be excited to see Tezzeret making his way back, while classic archetypes like Kavu, Slivers, and Eldrazi also make an appearance. The Cosmogoyf version of Tarmogoyf, anyone? It’s the same Magic you love, but with an intergalactic twist.

One of the standout features revealed during the preview is the new Station mechanic, centered around the subtypes Spacecraft and Planets. The idea is that cards can be powered up over time, gaining effects when they are “Stationed.” A good example of this is Seriema, which grants indestructibility to other tapped legendary creatures when it reaches enough Station power. Spacecraft cards will also play a prominent role, including as the central commanders in the pre-constructed Commander decks. Additionally, Station introduces a new ruling in Commander, allowing Vehicles to act as Commanders-get ready for a new kind of deck-building fun!

On the battlefield, lands take on a significant role with the introduction of Lander tokens. These tokens act as artifacts that can be sacrificed to search for basic land cards and put them directly into play, tapped. This is sure to enhance the power of Landfall decks and facilitate the quick deployment of the gorgeous new lands featured in the set.

Another mechanic, Warp, lets players cast cards from exile after an initial play. It gives a strategic advantage by enabling the immediate activation of abilities and then removing the card temporarily from the battlefield. Think of it as a way to trigger enters-the-battlefield effects or ramp up Station power with more freedom. Cards like Timeline Culler and Eusocial Engineering exemplify how Warp can be used creatively for early plays and later boosts.

The new set also introduces the Void mechanic, reminiscent of Kicker, which adds additional effects based on actions that occurred earlier in the turn. Cards like Voidforged Titan allow players to draw a card and lose 1 life when a nonland permanent leaves the battlefield or a spell is warped during the same turn.

Art lovers will be thrilled by the stunning visual treatments accompanying this set, such as the Stellar Sights borderless lands, poster-style artwork, and rare sci-fi pulp art featuring special guest card variants like Sliver Overlord. These cards not only add flavor to your collection but also elevate the overall aesthetic of the game.

Edge of Eternities also includes new and reprinted lands like Mutavault and Eldrazi Temple, which won’t be Standard-legal but will provide a visual feast for collectors. Other exciting promo cards include an alternate art version of Emissary Escort and a special promo of Starfield Shepherd.

Get ready for the Edge of Eternities set to launch officially on August 1, with pre-release events happening from July 25 to 31. There will be more previews to come, so stay tuned to Magic’s preview hub for all the latest updates.
