Mark Hamill’s BAFTA Blunder: A Jedi Wardrobe Malfunction and Demi Moore’s Iconic Thumbs Up
Even Jedi Masters aren’t immune to wardrobe malfunctions.
At the 2025 BAFTAs, Star Wars icon Mark Hamill found himself in an unexpected battle-not with the Dark Side, but with gravity and tailoring.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Hamill recounted how his pants betrayed him while he was presenting the award for Best Film to Conclave. “The ultimate actor’s nightmare,” he called it. What began as a snug-but-passable fit turned into a comedy of errors just minutes before he was due on stage in London. “My stylist had let them out four or five inches,” Hamill explained. “And our dresser Mary saved the day with a safety pin.”
Or so he thought. Moments before stepping on stage, the pin popped. With each stride to the podium, Hamill’s pants sank lower until they were around his knees. “I’m not kidding,” he emphasized, “they were at my knees!”
Trying to keep his cool, Hamill searched the audience for his wife but instead locked eyes with Demi Moore, who silently gave him a supportive thumbs up and a big smile-pure Hollywood class. Hamill, summoning the force of stage presence, clung to the teleprompter and made no mention of the pants drop during the speech.
“I just willed myself to believe it was an illusion. Like Jedi mind tricks,” he joked. Fortunately, the podium hid the incident from most of the audience-except those sitting to the side, who got the full premiere of Hamill’s unintentional pantomime.
Hamill later assured Colbert’s audience that his trousers were firmly in place this time: “Believe me, my pants are very secure tonight.”
Though many hoped he’d return as a Force Ghost in future Star Wars projects, Hamill once again confirmed he’s moving on from the galaxy far, far away. “It’s time to let new characters take the lead,” he said.
Even in an accidental comedy sketch, Hamill remains the charming, self-deprecating legend fans love-pants or no pants.
