Marvel Studios is planning a major shift for its cinematic universe – and the X-Men are at the heart of it.
In a recent round of interviews, studio president Kevin Feige confirmed that once Avengers: Secret Wars concludes Phase 6, the MCU will undergo what he calls a ‘reset,’ not a full reboot. And yes, that includes recasting the X-Men.
“We’re inspired by the 2015 Secret Wars comics,” Feige said. “Endgame closed a chapter. Secret Wars opens a new one. This is about beginnings.” According to Feige, the X-Men’s arrival in the MCU will mark the next big step, with a younger team and a storyline rooted in the core mutant experience – feeling different, isolated, and searching for belonging. The franchise will return to its roots at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
While Deadpool & Wolverine and Avengers: Doomsday will see familiar faces like Hugh Jackman and some former X-Men stars return, these are being treated as a send-off, not the future. “Reboot is a scary word,” Feige admitted. “But we’re focusing on a singular timeline and fresh storytelling.” Jake Schreier, known for directing Thunderbolts, is set to direct the first new X-Men film.
Still, fans are divided. Some argue that a clean break is needed – the Fox continuity was messy – while others think retaining talents like McAvoy and Fassbender could help the transition. There’s also concern about oversaturation, as Marvel’s recent projects have struggled to resonate both critically and commercially. “People want magic again, not more multiverse homework,” one fan noted.
Others are cautiously optimistic. The hope is that a younger, carefully cast X-Men lineup – with the right costumes and character depth – can restore the spark. There’s particular excitement for underused favorites like Nightcrawler, Rogue, and Psylocke finally getting the spotlight.
So, while the MCU might be closing one multiverse chapter, it’s setting the stage for a bold new one – one that could define the next generation of Marvel storytelling. If done right, the X-Men reboot could be the shot of adamantium the franchise needs.
