Mia Goth and Ryan Gosling Take Flight in Star Wars: Starfighter

Star Wars: Starfighter is lining up to be the most intriguing addition to the galaxy far, far away in years.

With Mia Goth officially joining Ryan Gosling in the cast, this film might just be the shakeup Star Wars fans have been waiting for.

Directed by Shawn Levy, best known for Deadpool & Wolverine, the movie is described as a standalone tale set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. That means it sidesteps the heavy baggage of past trilogies and instead carves out fresh space for storytelling. Levy confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2025 that this is not a prequel, sequel, or spin-off-but something wholly new. Fans hungry for originality in the Star Wars franchise might finally get their wish.

Gosling plays a man tasked with protecting his nephew from dark forces-and one of those forces is Goth’s mysterious villain. No details yet on her character’s name or backstory, but given her powerhouse performances in horror films like Pearl, expect something twisted, intense, and unforgettable.

There’s some chatter about whether this project is inspired by the Star Wars: Starfighter video games from the PS2/Xbox era. While the name is shared, insiders say the movie will not pull directly from the games’ lore. Instead, it uses the title as a thematic touchstone for new kinds of space dogfights, conflicts, and moral gray zones.

This film is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, shortly after The Mandalorian & Grogu wraps up its cinematic debut in 2026. Meanwhile, Daisy Ridley is also set to return in a separate sequel where Rey rebuilds the Jedi Order fifteen years post-Episode IX-so we’re now seeing the sequel-era timeline finally branching out.

With Levy’s fresh approach, Gosling’s proven star power, and Goth’s intense screen presence, Starfighter could finally be the jolt of life the Star Wars film franchise desperately needs. Whether it will satisfy hardcore fans or stir more division remains to be seen-but at least it isn’t playing it safe.
