, revealed in a recent interview with Louis Theroux that he turned down a major role in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, the Harry Potter spin-off series, because of his fear of becoming “too famous.” The actor explained that the offer came with a long-term commitment, which gave him second thoughts about joining such a high-profile project.

As Cera shared, the casting directors were eager to have him play a significant role, but the time commitment required for a multi-year project in a massive franchise led him to decline. He also expressed concerns about the overwhelming fame that comes with starring in such blockbuster films, especially in children’s movies, fearing that it could push him into a spotlight he wasn’t ready to embrace.

While he didn’t specify which role he was offered, many have speculated about which character Cera could have played. Could it have been the lead, Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne? Both actors are known for playing quirky, introverted characters, though it’s hard to imagine an American taking on such a distinctly British role. Perhaps Cera was considered for Jacob Kowalski, the down-to-earth American muggle, a role that would fit his comedic background.

Ultimately, Cera’s decision didn’t hurt his career-he went on to have continued success in both indie films and commercial projects. In the interview, Cera even mentioned that he might be open to joining another big franchise if the right opportunity came along, suggesting that his fears of fame have subsided. As Fantastic Beasts appears to have been put on pause, the Harry Potter universe will soon be reimagined for a new generation with a big-budget HBO series, but no word yet on whether Cera will be part of that.

I get it. I’d rather be a small actor and make about 5 million in a lifetime and live a peaceful life than be someone like Brad Pitt who can’t have lunch outside without tons of people gathering for pics. That much fame sounds terrible
