Former Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has shared the real reasons behind his departure from the beloved BBC sci-fi show after just 18 episodes.
During an appearance on the Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show, Gatwa revealed that, while he had initially joked about “getting old” – a sentiment shared in the official behind-the-scenes Doctor Who Unleashed documentary – the reality was far more complex.
The 32-year-old actor, the third-youngest to ever play the Doctor, opened up about the physical and emotional toll the role took on him. “It’s the most amazing job in the world,” Gatwa said, “but it’s strenuous. It takes a lot out of you – physically, emotionally, mentally. So, I – it was time.” He explained that his body, particularly his knees, had become increasingly tired, and that’s when he decided it was time to walk away.
Gatwa’s exit came as a surprise to many fans, especially after reports indicated that extensive reshoots were necessary for the season finale. The show has since entered a hiatus, with no official announcements regarding future episodes or whether Disney will renew its partnership.
Before his departure, Gatwa was supposed to make an appearance at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, but he pulled out due to a busy schedule, which raised speculation about the real reason for his withdrawal. Some fans speculated it was related to the controversy surrounding Israel’s involvement, but Gatwa dismissed those rumors. “I was just very busy,” he clarified.
In another interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today show, Gatwa confirmed he had finished with Doctor Who for good, further fueling rumors about the next incarnation of the Doctor. Despite his departure, he teased, “We all saw the gold sparkle… Or did we? I just don’t know who the next Doctor Who is. But it’s certainly not me.”
As the future of the show remains uncertain, insiders have hinted that Doctor Who might remain off the air for an extended period.
