Nexus Mods Sold After 24 Years: What’s Next for the Modding Giant?

After more than two decades of shaping the PC modding landscape, Nexus Mods-the internet’s largest modding hub-has officially changed hands.

Founder Robin “Dark0ne” Scott announced in a heartfelt blog post that he has sold the platform, stepping away from daily operations due to burnout and mental health struggles.

“The stress of being responsible for the behemoth I created has taken its toll,” Dark0ne shared, citing anxiety and burnout as key factors in the decision. The site, which recently passed an astonishing 10 billion mod downloads, has long been a staple for gamers looking to tweak, enhance, or outright transform their favorite titles.

While the identity of the new owner remains undisclosed, Dark0ne emphasized that the buyer understands both the business and the unique quirks of the modding community. “This isn’t some corporate exit or shady backroom deal,” he wrote. “It’s me finally choosing to take care of myself and handing over the reins to people I believe in.”

Dark0ne reassured users that core services and community functions won’t change. Modders and gamers should expect continuity, with the only major difference being that he’s no longer at the helm. “You probably won’t notice any difference,” he added, “and that’s a good thing.”

Still, the anonymity of the new ownership has stirred debate. While some hope this marks a new chapter of freedom and growth for Nexus Mods, others worry about censorship or further restrictions on controversial mods.

Whatever the future holds, one thing is clear: the legacy of Nexus Mods and its impact on gaming is undeniable. And with a new team in charge, fans are watching closely to see if the next era can live up to-or even surpass-the last.
