Nintendo Switch 2 Devkits Still Delayed as July Direct Approaches

The Nintendo Switch 2 may have been officially revealed back in April, but behind the scenes, confusion and frustration are mounting among developers.

According to trusted insider sources, many third-party developers are still waiting on devkits for the upcoming console – with no clear reason why.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Nate the Hate podcast, the insider revealed that Nintendo has changed its usual approach to distributing devkits. While Sony and Microsoft prioritize key partners and widely share kits early in the development cycle, Nintendo is reportedly treating the Switch 2 hardware as a top-secret project – even months after its reveal.

Multiple developers have allegedly reached out to Nintendo for devkit access, only to receive vague responses like “we’ll get back to you when the time is right.” That “time” still hasn’t arrived for many, and the silence is causing headaches for studios who are trying to prepare games for launch or even begin porting existing titles.

But it’s not just about access. Even some publishers that do have devkits are holding off on game announcements. Industry whispers suggest that companies want to avoid the long lead times that can kill hype – especially if their Switch 2 projects are ports of games already out on other platforms.

The good news? A change might be on the horizon. According to the same insider, a new Nintendo Direct is scheduled for the second half of July, likely in the final week. The presentation could shine a spotlight on third-party support for the Switch 2, which has been noticeably quiet so far.

There’s speculation that big names like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition may finally be confirmed for the new system. With Elden Ring recently receiving an ESRB rating, it’s clear that something is brewing – we just don’t know exactly when the reveal will hit.

All eyes are now on Nintendo to see if the fog around the Switch 2 will finally start to clear, or if developers will be left waiting in the dark a little longer.
