The Nintendo Switch 2 has been the talk of the gaming world since its early release. In just the first four days, the new console flew off shelves, selling over 3.5 million units, with its sales speed doubling that of the original Nintendo Switch. 
Thanks to these impressive numbers, market analysis firm DFC Intelligence has adjusted its 2025 sales forecast for the Switch 2, increasing the expected units from 15 million to 16 million.
This updated forecast reflects the Nintendo Switch 2’s growing role as the driving force behind gaming industry growth in 2025. While DFC acknowledges that the Switch 2 could hit even higher numbers-potentially 20 million units-it remains cautious, as Nintendo typically takes a conservative approach to inventory management. Therefore, the company has set its own projection at 15 million units for the fiscal year ending in March 2026, a figure that echoes its history of cautious but steady growth.
When the original Switch launched in March 2017, Nintendo initially projected 10 million units but ended up surpassing that figure, selling 15 million by the end of the fiscal year. Based on this track record, DFC Intelligence is confident that Nintendo can scale production to meet demand, navigating any potential tariff challenges
. Long-term predictions are also positive, with forecasts estimating that the Nintendo Switch 2 could sell up to 100 million units by 2029, positioning it as the leader in the console market for this generation.
DFC also highlights Nintendo’s evolving role in the industry, noting that the company is shifting from its previous status as a separate player in the market to a more collaborative stance with third-party publishers. With major upcoming releases like GTA VI and the Switch 2, both hardware and software sales are expected to reach new heights, setting industry records between 2026 and 2029.
