Nintendo Switch 2: Biggest Nintendo Launch in the UK, But PS5 Still Tops

The Nintendo Switch 2 has made a significant splash in the UK, achieving the highest launch sales for any Nintendo console in the region.

However, despite this impressive achievement, it still hasn’t surpassed the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S in terms of overall sales during their launch periods.

According to data from NielsenIQ, shared by The Game Business, the Nintendo Switch 2’s debut week saw more than double the launch sales of the original Nintendo Switch in the UK, though specific figures have yet to be confirmed. In 2017, the Nintendo Switch managed to sell around 80,000 units in its first week, while the Switch 2 has comfortably exceeded 113,000 units. While it’s not the highest console launch in the UK, it’s still one of the most impressive, with only the PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series consoles having achieved better numbers.

In fact, the Switch 2 now ranks fourth on the list of top 10 console launches in the UK by sales. The PlayStation 5 remains at the top, with a staggering 250,000 units sold in just two days, and over 450,000 by the end of 2020. Other notable launches include the PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and the original Nintendo Wii. Even though the Switch 2 hasn’t hit those heights in the UK, its performance in other regions, such as France, has been exceptional. The Switch 2 is reportedly the fastest-selling console ever in France, with 200,000 units sold in its opening weekend.

While the Switch 2 may not have broken the UK record, it’s clear that it has made a strong impact, proving Nintendo’s ongoing dominance in the gaming market. Whether or not it reaches the legendary heights of previous PlayStation and Xbox launches, the Switch 2’s performance in its first few days suggests that the demand for it is still very high.
