Norqain Independence Skeleton 40mm: A Compact, Elegant Evolution

Norqain has steadily expanded its catalog with innovative takes on their most beloved models over the years. Following the success of the Independence Skeleton series, originally launched in 2021, the Swiss brand has now unveiled the Norqain Independence Skeleton 40mm watches, debuting in 2025.

These new models retain the core design of their predecessors but with a more compact and versatile profile, catering to those who seek a smaller and more wearable timepiece.

The Norqain Independence Skeleton 40mm shares much of its DNA with the 42mm model, including its sleek 316L stainless steel case, flat sapphire crystals, and a striking mix of brushed, polished, and sandblasted finishes. However, one of the new 40mm models takes it a step further, featuring a black DLC (diamond-like carbon) finish that covers the entire case

. Both versions boast Norqain’s signature screw-down crowns at the 3 o’clock position and an engraveable plate on the opposite side, with a water resistance rating of 100 meters.

The 40mm version measures 40mm in diameter and 12.05mm thick, with a lug-to-lug distance of 46.3mm. Compared to the 42mm sibling, this model offers a smaller footprint but is slightly taller, offering a distinct on-wrist experience with adjusted proportions. This subtle tweak results in a fresh perspective for collectors who prefer a more compact watch without compromising on performance.

On the dial, the new 40mm models retain the open-worked design but with an added transparent plate, which creates a floating effect for the text. This change is a smart design decision that enhances the watch’s overall aesthetics, elevating it from the industrial look of traditional printed crystals.

The black DLC version features a contrasting orange seconds hand and the word “chronometer,” while the stainless steel model is accented with turquoise details. Both versions are equipped with X1 Super-LumiNova for improved legibility in low light conditions.

Strap options vary between the models, with the DLC-coated version available with either black or khaki green rubber straps, while the stainless steel model offers dark gray rubber or a matching stainless steel bracelet. Inside, both versions are powered by the Caliber NB08S automatic movement, Norqain’s branded version of the Sellita SW200-1S. This movement is COSC-certified as a chronometer, with a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 41 hours.

With a price tag starting at $4,490 USD, the new Norqain Independence Skeleton 40mm models are positioned similarly to their 42mm counterparts. While some collectors may feel hesitant about the price given the use of a Sellita-based movement, the attention to detail and overall quality of these timepieces remain impressive, with Norqain continuing to satisfy enthusiasts with its craftsmanship.
