Yesterday, Nothing officially confirmed the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 as the powerhouse chip behind the upcoming Nothing Phone (3). According to the company’s co-founder Akis Evangelidis, the new chip will deliver exceptional performance with a 33% faster CPU, 88% faster GPU, and an astonishing 125% improvement in NPU performance when compared to its predecessor, the Phone (2).
While the hardware is impressive, today, Evangelidis also addressed an important aspect for potential buyers: software support.
One of the main reasons the company opted for this chipset was its ability to provide longer and more reliable software support. Evangelidis emphasized the significant jump from the Phone (2)’s “4 & 4” (4 years of major OS updates and 4 years of security patches) to the Phone (3)’s “5 & 7” – 5 years of OS updates and an extended 7 years of security patches. This marks a remarkable upgrade, especially when considering the typical 3-year support for Android devices and the 4-year security update cycle that most phones offer. The shift to 5 and 7 years of support could be a major selling point for those who prioritize long-term software maintenance.
