Nothing has officially unveiled the Nothing Phone (3), its first flagship device, and with it comes the promise of an impressive 5 years of OS updates and 7 years of security patches. But here’s the catch: despite Android 16 being officially released by Google, the Nothing Phone (3) is shipping with Nothing OS 3.5, which is based on Android 15.
So, while the latest Android update is out, users of this new phone will have to wait a little longer for Nothing OS 4.0, which is set to be based on Android 16.
During the launch event, Carl Pei, the CEO and Founder of Nothing, confirmed that Nothing OS 4.0 will roll out “later this autumn.” While the Nothing Phone (3) will likely be the first device to receive the new update, other Nothing devices will follow suit as part of a gradual rollout.
For those eager to get their hands on the Phone (3), pre-orders begin on July 4, with full sales launching on July 15. This device promises solid specs: powered by the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC, a 6.67-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, four 50MP cameras, and a hefty 5,150mAh battery (with a 5,500mAh variant in India).
While the Nothing Phone (3) seems promising, the Android version at launch raises some eyebrows. Even though users can expect Android 16 to arrive in the coming months, some are questioning why the phone isn’t launching with the latest Android version from the start. It’s definitely a move that has sparked plenty of debate among tech enthusiasts and consumers.
