NVIDIA’s Smooth Motion Doubles FPS for RTX 40 Users in Latest Driver

NVIDIA has rolled out its new Smooth Motion frame generation tech for RTX 40 series GPUs via the latest 590.26 preview driver, promising a significant performance boost for gamers.

Much like AMD’s AFMF (Fluid Motion Frames), this technology generates interpolated frames between actual renders, effectively doubling the perceived framerate in compatible titles-without requiring native game support.

This system-level innovation gives a big edge to RTX 40 series users, especially in CPU-bound scenarios or games lacking DLSS Frame Generation. One user notably reported jumping from 82 to 164 FPS in World of Warcraft just by flipping the Smooth Motion toggle-though, right now, this toggle isn’t available through the official NVIDIA app. Instead, enthusiasts can enable it via the NVIDIA Profile Inspector tool, as noted by Macer on the Guru3D Forums.

However, it’s worth noting that this feature is still in preview and results vary. Some gamers have flagged visual artifacts and occasional instability. Also, while Smooth Motion doubles FPS, it doesn’t enhance image quality like DLSS does. Expect minor ghosting or jitter in fast-paced scenes-think of it more as a performance hack than a visual upgrade.

Still, the tech has massive appeal, especially for those playing older or less-optimized games. The best part? It’s software-based and doesn’t require any special in-game support. Just plug it in, toggle it, and you’re in business-well, almost. Until the full rollout arrives, tinkerers with the latest driver and a bit of nerve can give it a go and judge for themselves.
