One UI 7.0 Hands-On & Good Lock Global Release?

Samsung Unveils One UI 7.0 with Major Redesign at SDC 2024

Samsung officially announced One UI 7.0 during the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024. The new update, based on Android 15, promises to bring significant user interface improvements alongside a reimagined design based on three principles: Simple, Impactful, and Emotive. Although the company did not showcase the UI changes on stage, insights were gleaned from a Galaxy S24 Ultra running an early version of One UI 7.0.

Key Features of One UI 7.0

The Galaxy S24 Ultra, with firmware version S928USQU3BXI2, revealed several exciting features of One UI 7.0. The update introduces a brand-new two-page Quick Panel design. Users can now access notifications by swiping from the top left of the screen, while the top right swipe reveals quick settings toggles. Notifications are more prominent and now appear with circular icons, complemented by a stronger background blur effect compared to One UI 6.1.1. Additionally, the quick settings toggles include a dedicated volume and audio section, whose placement can be edited.

The task changer or multitasking UI showcases a new animation and three-dimensional stack effect with tilted app cards. The app drawer features a search bar at the bottom for easier access to apps, while the stock camera app is redesigned with all camera controls positioned at the bottom of the screen. Samsung has also introduced more fluid animations and transitions throughout One UI 7.0 and has reimagined some app icons, including those for Camera, Contacts, Galaxy Store, and Settings. In a move to appeal to more users, AR Emojis appear to be replaced with Galaxy Avatars.

Global Expansion of Good Lock

In addition to One UI 7.0, Samsung emphasized the potential worldwide availability of Good Lock. This suite of Samsung’s first-party apps facilitates deep UI customizations from the lock screen to the keyboard. Currently, Good Lock is available in a limited number of countries, and users in non-supported regions resort to APK sideloading. However, Samsung’s focus on Good Lock during the keynote suggests plans to release the app globally, enhancing the personalization options for Galaxy smartphone and tablet users worldwide.

Overall, Samsung’s SDC 2024 announcements paint an exciting future for the company’s interface and customization offerings. For a closer look at One UI 7.0, check out our hands-on video with the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
