The Outer Worlds 2 Revealed: Everything You Need to Know

The Outer Worlds 2: Bold Choices, Bigger Worlds, and Hilarious Chaos

Obsidian Entertainment is back with a bang, unveiling The Outer Worlds 2 in a delightfully quirky 30-minute Direct presentation, complete with gameplay reveals, fresh mechanics, and a healthy dose of satire. Hosted by comedian Ben Schwartz, the showcase confirmed the sequel’s release date: October 29, 2025.

The upcoming RPG throws players into the boots of an Earth Directorate Agent-basically a futuristic space marshal who “fixes what’s broken,” though how you define “fixing” is entirely up to you. Obsidian is doubling down on player agency, offering more nuanced character backgrounds, traits, and perks that influence everything from dialogue to combat style. Want to be dumb but lucky? That’s valid. Prefer a stealthy assassin with parkour moves? You can do that too.

Speaking of stealth, one standout perk is “Assassin,” which gives you a speed boost after landing a stealth kill. Perks are more Fallout: New Vegas than ever-unsurprising, considering Obsidian’s legacy.

The arsenal is delightfully absurd. Weapons range from leveling guns with fireworks (Rookie’s Reward) to pop-up ad projectors that confuse enemies, to rhythm swords that dish out extra damage if you attack to the beat. Even grenades have gone sci-fi, with variants that suspend foes in zero-gravity. Exploration is faster and freer too, with expanded movement options and a long-awaited third-person view.

Flaws return with more personality. “Bad Knees” makes crouch-jumping risky, while “Kleptomaniac” means you occasionally steal against your will. “Sungazer” rewards sun exposure but wrecks your vision, and “Overprepared” gives big magazines-with penalties if you don’t reload obsessively. These flaws push you to roleplay hard or hilariously fail trying.

Factions and companions are also getting a major glow-up. The Protectorate is a luxury-obsessed dictatorship with chilling overtones. The Order of the Ascendant is science-gone-cult. Each has ties to the storyline and influence how you experience the game, including through a radio system packed with original tracks and in-universe ads. There are six companions to recruit, from Niles the idealist agent, to Val the helpful drone, Marisol the assassin mathematician, Aza the cultist, Inez the survivor medic, and Tristan the armored enforcer.

Obsidian’s theme of player freedom shines in an early mission, “The Bridge.” Options include diplomacy, stealth, combat, gear-based traversal-or sacrificing a companion to bypass a checkpoint (ruthless!). The whole design philosophy is clear: your choices matter, and the chaos is encouraged.

As Obsidian puts it, “This is the biggest game we’ve ever made.” Judging by the Direct, they’re not kidding. And with an $80 price tag and Game Pass support, fans are already lining up-while others are still accidentally mixing it up with Outer Wilds (again).

Game Pass ftw again. I’m not paying 80 bucks unless it comes with fireworks IRL
