The highly anticipated sequel to Outriders, dubbed Outriders 2 or Project Gemini, was one of the two major projects that People Can Fly had to cancel this year. Despite the excitement surrounding the game, it was clear that development was still in its early stages. According to a new report from Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming, corroborating a previous article by TheThumbWars, Outriders 2 was indeed the canceled game codenamed Gemini.
Although there were some assets shared with Insider Gaming, including screenshots and footage, it was evident that the game was far from completion.
The game had reached the motion capture stage earlier in the year, indicating that development was still in its infancy. People Can Fly CEO, Sebastian Wojciechowski, confirmed the cancellation of Outriders 2 last month, explaining that the project was halted due to a lack of communication from the publisher, Square Enix. Specifically, the publisher failed to provide a draft of the content rider for the publishing agreement, which would have outlined the terms and conditions for future milestones in the project. This uncertainty about the game’s future led to the suspension of development.
Although Outriders 2 and another project, Project Bifrost, were scrapped, People Can Fly isn’t slowing down. The studio is still working on exciting projects, including the highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day for Microsoft, as well as a secretive project based on a popular Sony IP. While fans were left disappointed by the cancellation of Outriders 2, there’s still hope that People Can Fly’s future endeavors will spark the same excitement.
