The Pixel 10 Pro Fold could set a new standard for foldable phones, topping Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 with its superior durability. Google is reportedly bringing back the Pixel Pro Fold series this year with an upgraded version: the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Unlike many other foldables, which struggle to guard against dust, Google is taking a major step forward by boosting the device’s Ingress Protection (IP) rating.
Recent innovations in foldable technology have made it easier for manufacturers to protect these high-end devices from water, but dust protection remains a significant challenge. With foldables featuring multiple moving parts, dust particles can easily get inside when the device is opened, potentially damaging sensitive components.
Traditionally, most foldables have had an IPX8 rating. The “X” signifies no rating for dust protection, while the “8” means the device is water-resistant up to about five feet for 30 minutes. Motorola’s Razr (2025) series has an IP48 rating, which offers some protection against larger particles (1.0mm or greater) but still falls short on dust resistance. Samsung also equipped the Galaxy Fold 6 and Galaxy Flip 6 with an IP48 rating.
Now, Google is stepping up with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which will feature an IP68 rating-making it the first foldable to match the dust and water protection of high-end smartphones. This significant upgrade means that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be fully protected against small particles and water immersion.
Achieving an IP68 rating required changes to the foldable’s design, including a thinner hinge, which makes the device more comfortable to hold. The cover display is also getting a slight boost, increasing from 6.3 inches on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to 6.4 inches on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The combination of a more compact hinge and a larger display will help set the Pixel 10 Pro Fold apart in the competitive foldable market.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 10 series, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, on August 20th, with a potential release date on August 28th. When it hits the market, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be a standout for its impressive durability and protection from dust, giving it a clear edge over the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.
