The Pixel 6a has been facing significant overheating problems that led to a battery explosion just 27 days ago. A user reported that their device ‘spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night.’ This incident is just one of many complaints about the smartphone’s heating issues. As a result, Google has decided to roll out a mandatory software update to mitigate the overheating risk. However, the update comes with a catch-it will reduce the device’s charging performance and overall battery capacity.

Alex Moriconi, a Google spokesperson, provided a statement to Android Authority regarding the upcoming software patch aimed at reducing battery overheating. The update will be applied to a portion of Pixel 6a phones, and customers affected by the issue will be contacted starting next month. The update introduces battery management features that limit capacity and charging speed once the battery hits 400 charge cycles. Google assures that affected users will receive all necessary information to handle the issue.
The Pixel 6a is part of Google’s mid-range lineup and is expected to receive updates until June 2027. This makes it an attractive option for long-term use. However, with the ongoing overheating incidents, owners may start considering upgrading to avoid further risks. While battery explosions are rare, the frequent overheating issues with the Pixel 6a have made this a more common concern, prompting the software update.
This issue may also encourage Google to reassess its future device strategies. The company might consider more power-efficient components, starting with the Tensor G5 for the upcoming Pixel 10 series. This chipset, set to be mass-produced on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process, promises better efficiency. But despite this, Google may still opt for Samsung’s less power-efficient baseband chips for its Pixel 10 series, possibly due to cost considerations or a special deal with Samsung.
For now, Pixel 6a owners need to be cautious with their charging habits and stay alert for any software updates. With Google’s patch on the horizon, it’s crucial to stay informed to avoid overheating issues.
