In a surprising twist for high-end gaming, Pure Pool Pro is stepping up as one of the rare titles targeting native 8K resolution at 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5 Pro.
Developed by Ripstone Games, this sequel to 2014’s Pure Pool is aiming to show off just what Sony’s upgraded console can do-even if it’s with balls and cues instead of explosions and car chases.
The announcement came with a sleek new trailer, but the real kicker is the tech. According to Ripstone’s George Holland, the game’s fixed perspective around the table and the studio’s lightweight proprietary engine made native 8K performance achievable-even before major optimization phases. It helps that it’s, well… pool.
While other high-profile games like Gran Turismo 7 and No Man’s Sky support 8K, they rely on PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution to upscale from 4K. In contrast, Pure Pool Pro runs natively at 8K on PS5 Pro and even hits 120 FPS at 4K on the base PS5.
Of course, very few gamers actually have 8K displays. But the move is less about the screen in your living room and more about flexing the hardware. The PS5 Pro’s enhanced specs allow games like this to deliver ultra-sharp visuals with high frame rates, even in modes traditionally limited to 30 FPS.
Still, not everyone is thrilled. The internet responded with a mix of amusement and apathy. Some questioned the focus on a digital pool game for showcasing such horsepower. Others joked that while billiards are hitting 8K, games like GTA 6 might still be struggling to hit 4K. But underneath the sarcasm lies a truth: the PS5 Pro is making 8K gaming more real-even if it starts with something as chill as a pool table.
