Red Dead Online fans are buzzing with excitement after Rockstar dropped a surprise update, bringing four new missions into the game.
These new additions have sparked fresh speculation about the future of both Red Dead Online and its parent game, Red Dead Redemption 2, with fans wondering if a next-gen update or even an Undead Nightmare 2 expansion could be in the works.
The new ‘Strange Tales of the West’ update has come out of nowhere, with many players previously assuming that Rockstar had moved on from Red Dead Online after the lack of content updates since 2022. The update includes missions like ‘Strange Tales of The Plague,’ ‘Strange Tales of Modern Science,’ ‘Strange Tales of The Bayou,’ and ‘Strange Tales of The Wilderness.’ Notably, the addition of a zombie-infested mode has stirred excitement, especially with the first mission set in the iconic town of Armadillo.
The update is the first major content drop for Red Dead Online since 2021, and fans have wasted no time diving into the missions. While some are enjoying the new content, many have expressed concerns over the simplicity of the missions, with some even calling them ‘light horde mode missions’ lacking in depth.
What does this update mean for the future of Red Dead Redemption 2? Some are hoping for a remastered next-gen version of the game, while others are dreaming of an Undead Nightmare 2-style expansion. There’s even a rumor circulating about a next-gen update for the game, potentially bringing improvements to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and possibly a Nintendo Switch 2 version coming in 2025.
Despite mixed reactions to the content update, there’s no denying that fans are eager for more. With ‘Strange Tales of the West’ officially marked as Vol. 1, it’s clear that Rockstar may have more up their sleeves. For now, Red Dead Online lives on, and fans are hopeful for what’s next.

I’m over it. AMAZING game but, I don’t care about a current gen update anymore with GTA 6 on the horizon. This should’ve been done years ago
